Damongo named regional capital of Savannah

President Akufo-Addo named Damango as the capital of the new Savannah region.

the The President made the announcement at a ceremony Tuesday at the Jubilee House to present the Constitutional Instrument supporting the creation of the region.

He said that while the Savannah region has many natural resources, it is ironically the least developed part of the northern region.

"It's now up to the government to get the Savannah region's rapid development processes moving," he added.

Ninety-nine percent of the region's residents voted YES in a referendum held on Thursday, December 27, 2018 for the creation of the region, which was delineated by the Northern Region.

The districts that make up the savanna region are Bole District, North Gonja District, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, West Gonja District, East Gonja Municipality, and Central Gonja District.

About Damongo

Damongo is the capital of the district of West Gonja and hosts the suzerain of the kingdom of Gonja; the Yagbonwura. It is also the capital (largest city) of the Damongo constituency whose current MP is Adam Mutawakilu.

Damongo boasts of key tourist attractions such as the Mole National Park where visitors are guaranteed to see a myriad of animals, the most important of which are elephants. It also houses the famous Larabanga Mosque and the mystic stone of Larabanga.

Among the Ghanaian-born personalities from Damongo are John Dramani Mahama (former President of Ghana), Alban Bagbin (Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament), Benjamin Kumbuor (former Defense Minister) and Michael Abu Sakara Foster (former Presidential Candidate of the CPP).
