On Friday, six new regions – Oti, Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah and North East – will be added to existing regions of the country, bringing the total to 16.

This means that country geographers will have to revise their notes to include the six new regions cut from existing regions through the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development, as well as their capitals.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, yesterday, Tuesday, February 12, 2019, not only began rewriting the geography of Ghana, but also marked history by publicly presenting Constitutional Instruments (ICs) to give effect two of the six new Member States. the regions.

The first two regions to receive their CIs were the Northeast (CI 116) and the Savannah (CI 115), whose capitals were also announced by the president at Jubilee House, amidst the excitement. Chiefs and leaders of the new regions were present to attend the historic event.

Incidentally, it is the selection of new capitals that has raised concerns, petitions and even demonstrations in some neighborhoods, some people have preferred their choices for capitals.

The Daily Graphic believes however that while it may be exciting to choose its favorite city as the capital of a new region, the purpose for which the new regions were created will be defeated if the goal the audacity taken by Akufo is put forward. -The government is placed on cities that become capitals.

We believe that the focus should be on the best ways to provide the newly created regions with the resources needed to accelerate development in order to be at the same level as the other 10 regions.

Therefore, we urge all sections that want particular cities to remain united and committed to contributing their share to the development of new regions.

The government, which in its wisdom has decided to facilitate the creation of new regions, despite many obstacles, should trust the choice of cities best suited to be capitals.

The President has already announced the allocation of 20 million GH ¢ to each of the newly created regions for their development and is also committed to ensuring that the development of the new regions is realized.

We should give him the benefit of the doubt.

Presenting IC 116 to representatives of the Northeast region, President Akufo-Addo called for a united front to make the region one of the best in the country, saying that "the projects and structures of the government will be shared equitably throughout the region ".

"The government will ensure that the desire for growth and progress, which is the underlying reason for the vote to create the Northeast region, is met," he added.

The Daily Graphic reiterates the fact that while the Bono East and Ahafo regions are receiving their CI today and that the West, North and Oti regions are taking their turn Friday, the focus should be on growth and progress of regions, not cities. are chosen as their capitals.

At the same time, we urge the inhabitants of Nalerigu, capital of the 11th region of the Northeast, and Damongo, capital of the 12th region, Savannah, to redouble their efforts so that the cities that suit the capitals and be careful not to betray the confidence that reigns in them by the president.

They should also ensure that all districts in these regions also benefit from development projects.
