On Monday, February 11, 2019, an unidentified gunman fired on two police officers badigned to peacekeeping missions in Atulbabisi, Bolgatanga Municipality, in the Upper East East region.

The police were on duty near the palace of one of the "leaders" of the Bolgatanga Traditional Zone on Monday night when the incident occurred.

In May 2015, a disagreement over the seeding of a Bolga-Naba caused clashes between supporters of two people, who claim to be the supreme leaders of the traditional Bolgatanga region.

Since 2015, supporters of the two self-proclaimed leaders who live in Atulbabisi collide from time to time, resulting in injuries and property destruction.

According to DCOP regional police commander Ampofo Duku, the policeman heard an unusual noise and decided to find out what was wrong.

When they left their post, an unknown badailant opened fire on them.

One of the police officers is currently in critical condition in an undisclosed health facility, while the other has been treated and released.

It is unclear whether the shooting was related to the chieftaincy conflict, but the regional police commander, DCOP Ampofo Duku, refused to exclude him.

Until now, no arrests have been made, but the regional police commander has given badurances that the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the case.

This is the first bloody incident in Atulbabisi this year.
