Mauro Icardi was removed from his duties as captain at Inter Milan.
The striker is wearing the armband since the start of the 2015-16 season, but Inter announced Wednesday afternoon that he would be replaced by Samir Handanovic.
This comes amidst difficult negotiations over the renewal of the contract with Argentina.
Mauro Icardi was dismissed as captain by Inter Milan due to contractual problems.
It is also feared that he is tempted to leave San Siro by the end of summer 2021.
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb also announced that Icardi would not be part of the group for Inter's Europa League match against Rapid Vienna on Thursday.
Manager Luciano Spaletti had hinted that the contract problems had hit Icardi's displays this weekend: "It's obvious that Mauro is seeing his performance affected by some recent situations.
"He must free himself from the discourse that surrounds him. The directors agreed to start talking about the contract, so now they have to go and get it.
The decision to remove the Icardi armband was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Wanda Icardi, his wife and his agent, said that Icardi was in no hurry, but that he wanted to stay.
"Spalletti did not have it for me," said Wanda. "I did not talk about renewal. When the club called me, it was to get to know each other better and talk about other things.
"I would like Mauro to be more protected by the club because some unpleasant things sometimes come out of the interior.
"The priority is Inter: I have never asked for renewal. We are in no hurry, he still has two years left.

The reaction to the decision was generally positive on the part of Inter fans.
