Police have since arrested seven suspects
Abdullah Habib Abiola, secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of the southern Salaga constituency in the northern region, confirmed on Frontline at Rainbow Radio 87.5 Fm that the majority of angry youths who had set fire to the office of the party were members.
"We can identify some of them and the police have also chosen […] The majority of them are party members, "he said.
He told animator Kwabena Agyapong that some of the angry young people were members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said young people in the region felt Salaga should have been the capital because they believed they had contributed significantly to the NPP's victory in 2016.
Habib Abiola said residents were expecting the president to make a political decision in favor of Salaga because they voted for the NPP.
He revealed that the residents of Salaga had solicited the interest of the party and that he knew that the residents would be disappointed after the choice of Damango, but we had not expected that the party office would be burned.
The NPP officer said that any decision made by the president was in the public interest and we would respect it.
Abdullah Habib Abiola feared that youth would cause more chaos if security did not take action to calm the nerves and protect lives and property.
Some angry young people set fire to the NPP's office in Salaga on Tuesday after the president announced that Damango would be the capital of the new Savannah region.
The angry young man also destroyed the billboards and other logistical elements of the party, saying that the capital should have been Salaga.
Police have since arrested seven suspects.
