Goaso, which has been designated the capital of the region, was the capital of the municipality of Asunafo North and is located between three major cities; Mim, Kukuom and Hwidiem.

In addition to Goaso, which was eventually designated regional capital of the region, various groups lobbied for cities such as Duayaw-Nkwanta, Bechem and Kenyasi to be designated as regional capitals.

Earlier reports have also suggested that Goaso or Bechem would eventually be named the capital of the new region.

Residents of areas designated for the creation of the new region of Ahafo in December 2018 have overwhelmingly voted for its establishment in the Brong Ahafo region.

90% of voters in the Ahafo enclave went to the polls, 99.68% of them pronouncing for the creation of the region, while 0.24% voted against.
