(Reuters) – Elon Musk's Tesla Inc. on Wednesday launched a security feature called "Sentinel Mode" for its electric cars, in an effort to make its vehicles more attractive to buyers.
This feature will be compatible with US model 3 vehicles, followed by model S and X vehicles built after August 2017, the electric car manufacturer announced.
When activated, the "sentinel mode" monitors the environment around a car left unattended and uses the vehicle's external cameras to detect potential threats, according to Tesla's blog here.
A minimal threat will be detected if someone looks at the car, triggers a message on the touch screen and warns that his cameras are recording.
For a more serious threat, such as when someone breaks a window, the mode activates the car alarm, increases the brightness of the central screen, broadcasts loud music and alerts owners about their Tesla mobile app.
In the United States, 773,139 motor vehicles were stolen in 2017, the highest level since 2009, according to data from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. right here
Last week, Tesla lowered the price of its Model 3 sedan for the second time this year to make its cars more affordable for US buyers. The Californian company based in Palo Alto has cut costs because it hopes to generate profits this year.
