The TriStar Centennial Cardiovascular Center is the only hospital in Tennessee to have advanced technology to help doctors detect and diagnose lung cancer.

Doctors using Centennial's technology use an X-box-type controller to pbad an oscilloscope through the patient's lungs.

This helps doctors extract hard-to-reach nodules that may be cancerous.

"When we can find lung cancer less than a centimeter as we can with this technology, the cure rate is 91%," said Susan Garwood, a pulmonologist. "Think about what this is going to do when you are dealing with the current situation, the landscape is that 80% of people do not reach five years."

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States because it is not detectable in earlier stages.
