CAIRO – A group of Sudanese independent trade unions are urging citizens to demonstrate in front of the capital's presidential palace, Khartoum, demanding the resignation of autocratic president Omar Bashir.

The umbrella, which is backed by opposition parties, said the march would take place on Thursday.

Previous marches at the palace witnessed clashes with police who used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters.

The main Sudanese opposition groups participated Wednesday in a joint press conference, the first since the wave of unrest that erupted in December, with the aim of calling for an end to the regime of the three decades of al-Bashir.

They called for a four-year transitional government, followed by elections.

Initially, the protests in Sudan focused on soaring prices and the failure of the economy, but quickly turned into calls for Al-Bashir's resignation.
