The largest shopping centerManchester United would have shortlisted three defensive targets before the summer period while they were looking to significantly strengthen their back line, while the club also continues to be tied to Juventus winger Douglas Costa.

Despite the uncertainties about the long-term managerial quality, the signing of at least one new defenseman seems to be United's summer priority before the 2019/20 season.

Old Trafford has been badociated with more than 40 defensemen in the past two seasons. But a Daily Mirror report implies that their options have been reduced to three, with the question now whether they will get trades via the line.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The central rear Napoleon Kalidou Koulibaly remains the obvious name. The Senegalese international is considered one of the best defenders of Europe at the moment. However, it would probably take a world record bid of at least 90 million pounds to buy it.

Nikola Milenkovic, who was followed in international action by Jose Mourinho in 2018, is another potential target that keeps popping up. The Serbian giant also has the advantage of being versatile enough to operate in the back and center. Information reported in recent months has cost him about 50 million pounds.

Lucas Hernandez, of Atletico Madrid, is the third option cited by the Mirror, and of which less has been talked about so far. The 23-year-old won the World Cup last year as a French left-back, but continued his migration to defense center this season. The report however notes that Hernandez would probably be more expensive than Milenkovic.

It remains to be seen if United will try to recruit additional specialized backs this summer. Ashley Young recently signed a one-year contract extension but will be 34 before the start of next season, while Antonio Valencia should be out of contract in four months.
