TORONTO – The Indian Detective star Russell Peters has become a very real crime fighter this week when he helped kill a man who allegedly attempted to steal a jewelery store in New York City.
Security images published on the TMZ tabloid website show the Canadian comedian helping to apprehend a man who allegedly attempted to flee the New York diamond district store with an article.
According to police sources, TMZ said a 27-year-old man was trying to steal a ring worth $ 150,000 on Tuesday.
A man has been charged with robbery and criminal possession of stolen goods, according to the report.
The brother and director of Peters confirmed the report to the Canadian Press, noting that the humonist from Brampton, Ontario, was in New York for a series of sold-out shows on Long Island and New Jersey.
Clayton Peters said the jewelry belongs to a friend of the movie's star, who portrayed the role of a Toronto cop in the television series "The Indian Detective," broadcast on CTV and Netflix.
He said Peters was visiting his friend's house and ended up using his blue belt skills in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to help control the potential thief.
He added that the Emmy and Peabody award-winning comics also made a statement to the police.
Peters is known for blurring racial stereotypes in his stand-up, which has sold all stages of the world and has been shot for various specials.
His current tour will take him through several US cities until early May.
Last year, he co-hosted the Netflix series "A Little Help with Carol Burnett".
"The Indian Detective" was recently nominated for the Canadian Screen Award for Best Drama Series Limited.
Other Peters actor credits include the "Source Code", "Breakaway", "Chef" and "Supercon" movies.
He and Jennifer Andrade, a former Miss Universe Honduras, are expecting a child together.
On Thursday, he posted a photo on them on his Instagram account, saying it was a boy.
Peters, 48, also has an eight-year-old daughter with his ex-wife, Monica Diaz.
