He said that he had ended up with another runner and hikers who had given him water and had taken him to the hospital.

Kauffman said that if the adrenaline rush and survival instinct had helped him overcome the encounter, the fact that he had chosen not to use his headphones to listen to the music that day had also played a role.

"Most of the time, I do not feel any residual trauma," he told KUNC radio. "I tend to move forward, it's my personality."

The authorities praised his quick thinking, saying that he had handled the situation perfectly.
