Following the creation of the Bono East and Ahafo regions, what remains of the ancient Brong Ahafo region was named "Bono region", with Sunyani retained as the capital.
However, the remaining parts of the former Northern, Western and Volta regions retain their old names, as the names of the new regions created in these areas do not affect the old names.
Minister of Reorganization and Regional Development, Dan Botwe, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that the Attorney General will soon start the constitutional process to give legal support to the names.
Administrative areas of the Bono area include Sunyani Municipality, Sunyani West District, Berekum Municipality, Dormaa Municipality, Dormaa East District, Dormaa West District, Jaman South Municipality, District from Jaman West and Jaman North District. .
Last Wednesday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presented the constitutional instruments for the creation of Bono East and Ahafo regions to their representatives at separate ceremonies at the Jubilee House.
This means that the Brong Ahafo region, which was the second largest region in the country and covers an area of 39,557 square kilometers, no longer exists.

No taxation
Mr Botwe said the Bono area name was not imposed by the government.
He explained that this was proposed by the leaders and opinion leaders of the region during the public hearings of the commission of inquiry on the creation of new regions.
"Once the chiefs suggested the name and that it was accepted by the inquiry commission, it provided enough reasons for it to be adopted.
"So, now, the remaining part of the Brong Ahafo region is known as the Bono area," said the minister.
Justifying why the name was given, he once said that Ahafo was removed and Bono East also, there was no reason to maintain the name Brong Ahafo Region.
"Yes, the name of the region must change and the Attorney General will soon take steps to change the old name to give legal support to the new name," he said.
Remaining regions
For the regions of the West, Volta and North, Mr Botwe said that there was no reason to change the names, because the names attributed to the new regions did not change. did not affect the old names.
"The northern region will always be the northern region because the names of the new regions created from it, Savannah and Northeast, do not affect it. In the same way, the western region will remain the western region, because the new region, the western North, will not affect it, and the Volta region will remain the Volta region, because the region of Oti n ' will not affect his name, "Botwe said.
Development
The last two regions to be created, Oti and Western North, will receive their CI next Wednesday at the Jubilee House with the President to allow them to complete the entire process.
Mr. Botwe is pleased with the progress made so far, with the exception of the troubles that occurred in Salaga after the choice of Damongo as capital of the Savanna region.
"Up to now, the process has been encouraging and I congratulate the leaders and the people for helping the government to follow this path," he said.
He said the creation of the regions was a matter of accelerated development and promised that the Akufo-Addo government would not deviate from this path.
"This government will ensure the equitable distribution of development projects in cities and no one will be left behind," he said.
Mr Botwe added that regional offices of government institutions would not be located in regional capitals alone, but that some would be located in other cities.
