"One thing we're seeing right now," said Dorsey, "is that people are" canceled "because of things they've said on Twitter in the past." This is probably a nod to Kevin Hart, who lost his role as organizer of the 2019 Oscars after the broadcast of homophobic tweets in 2011. "There is no credible way to go back and clarify, or have a conversation to show the learning and transition since, "added Dorsey.
So, instead of simply removing the original tweet (which people can still do), Dorsey and his team are looking for a way to keep it. But, to this is added a clarification or rebuttal resembling a tweet quote, to help explain the earlier statement. Dorsey added that the clarification, in any form, could not be removed, so that people could not quote the tweet by tweet and distort it potentially out of context.
Dorsey added that Twitter did not have the official intention of launching such a feature in the near future, but that this was being discussed at headquarters. The CEO added that his mission was to make people less monitored online because he thought people were holding back to avoid the risk of public shame. Instead, he hopes that Twitter can serve as a document showing how people can grow and develop over time.
At least it's the hope.
Quotations edited for brevity.
