Gianfranco Zola defended the way Maurizio Sarri used Callum Hudson-Odoi this season, with Chelsea fans becoming increasingly angry with the 18-year-old.
Since the close of the transfer window at the end of January, the winger has played only two matches in the semifinal, totaling just six minutes last night in the match of the Europa League in Malmo.
Hudson-Odoi has not yet made his Premier League debut for the Blues and his future is on hold, Bayern Munich having made three offers for him this summer.
The Blues also had to reject a request to transfer the player himself while he was trying to get the transfer of 35 million pounds into the Bundesliga. Bayern should replace it this summer.
The Blues could convince him to stay at Stamford Bridge and sign a new long-term contract if he had more playing time, which has not been the case recently.
This prompted some Blues fans to think that Hudson-Odoi was not wanted by the coaching staff, but Zola perfectly explained that it was part of their plans.
"I do not agree on that," said Zola. "He's always on the edge of the team, as soon as there is an opportunity, he plays, sometimes from the beginning, sometimes he arrives.
"The manager gives him many reasons to feel involved and desired.I want to emphasize: there are not many 18-year-old players in Europe who play as much as he can, there may be one or two.
"He plays, and in addition, he is a player we appreciate and believe we are growing in. He has a brilliant future in this club … Maurizio loves … the whole group of coaches like him.
"Please, you must understand that he is surrounded by high level players. You must work hard to be better than them, and that's what we want." want him to play, but that he continues to progress, he can always do better than him. "
