Without love for the nation, we have no future!

Call it what you want. Some call it patriotism.

Some call it nationalism. Some call it the civic spirit.

Regardless of the description one chooses to give, love for one's country is an essential part of its growth and development.

Nothing grows without love. Skills do not grow without love. Knowledge does not grow without love. And in the same spirit, a nation can not develop without love.

One can choose from many angles to diagnose the puzzle of Ghana's development.

One can choose to focus on the social, historical, legal and political angles of these issues.

But we can simply choose to reduce it to one thing – the lack of love for the nation.

It is difficult to understand why many people claim to love this nation without being willing to lift a finger to make it better.

If there is a form of love floating on the surface of this nation, it is self-love, nothing more and nothing less.

What would encourage people to steal money for joint projects and put it in their personal accounts?

What would entice foreigners to pollute the rich water sources we have for a few dollars?

What would cause someone to lead and help foreigners and foreigners to deprive the country of its taxes and general compliance with the law?

What would force a Ghanaian to sleep at work and watch the state lose so much in terms of income?

It ultimately comes down to egoism and lack of patriotism and love for the nation.

It's easy to forget.

But we have not reached this stage of our national identity by simply watching things unfold.

It was a fight. Lives have been lost.

People have given up their freedoms and their economic well-being.

People have given everything so that we can have a sense of stability in this country.

These things did not come overnight.

Our ancestors and the men and women who fought for independence were convinced that our country was capable of becoming the best place in the world.

They gave everything because they liked so much this country called Ghana.

But at one point, the love that many people had for this nation became adulterous.

Self-love was better.

Whereas in the past, people preferred to die for the state, the state would rather die every day, especially at the expense of those to whom the welfare of the state had been entrusted.

We are not trying anymore. Or even if we try, we do not try too much. We are simply satisfied to be mediocre.

We love to look back and be proud of the achievements of our past, but we do not realize that we have an obligation to give future generations a source of inspiration and guidance.

If we love this country, as we should, the level of corruption in this country would have been reduced.

If we love the nation as it deserves, we would not see the level of neglect, theft, abuse and total waste of state resources.

For various reasons, we have become so disconnected that we hardly see the negative impact of our actions on the state.

In the case of our personal property, we are happy to protect them from the suffering of our lives.

In the case of state-owned properties and problems involving the state, we simply shrug our shoulders and say to ourselves – it does not matter, it's the property of the state.

There is no developed country in which its citizens are nonchalant and act irresponsibly in the affairs of the state.

It's totally unheard of.

Citizens of rich and prosperous countries do not remain indifferent.

A large part of them are actively involved in state management.

They talk, demonstrate and make sure the right things are done.

This is possible because they understand that loyalty to the state is a very important factor in their development as a nation.

Unfortunately, this point is lost to us.

The change must come. And it must come very fast.

We must be aware that our ultimate loyalty goes to the state.

And it is acceptable to support politicians – but we must never do it at the expense of state welfare.

We must never.

As I said earlier, the key question for us is whether we are going to leave something that the next generation will look at and who will be proud and inspired

Or are we going to watch as the resources and wealth of this nation are plundered?

This should be our concern.
