Mason Greenwood's hopes of making a spectacular introduction to Manchester United were hit by an injury.
The 17-year-old could have claimed to cover Anthony Martial or Jesse Lingard after both were dismissed for up to three weeks.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been deprived of his potential as a wildcard. Greenwood, 17, was left out for about 15 days with an undisclosed injury.
The star of the academy is considered one of the brightest prospects in United after his outstanding performances at the youth level.
Solskjaer was keen to block the project to send it on loan in January, with the aim of presenting him his team debut before the end of the season.
And it would have been an option because the acting manager of United is forced to weigh the tactical reshuffle to cope with the loss of two-thirds of his most powerful attack.
In the defeat of the Champions League on Tuesday against Paris Saint Germain, Lingard had problems tendon hamstring while Martial was injured in the groin in the same match.
The two men must now fight to be back in Paris next month.
They will certainly miss the key games against Chelsea in England and Liverpool Cup.
"They will be away for two to three weeks," said the Norwegian. "Then you look at the young players, Mason Greenwood, it's time for you to come in – and he's also hurt, unfortunately.
"Sometimes that's the chance, but Mason will have a chance.
"We still have advanced options – Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong have been training with us all week, so there is a good chance they are involved."
Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku should be recalled for Monday's fifth round FA Cup draw at Stamford Bridge – but both lost ground under Solskjaer.
It should be noted that United's game plan was revealed after the defeat of Martial and Lingard in the defeat 2-0 against PSG.

One may wonder if Solskjaer can play his high pressing system without his strongest XI.
He added: "There is a chance for everyone who plays, Alexis, Romelu, Chongy or Angel. Anthony and Jesse have done very well for us – they are essential.
"But with Rom and Alexis, they have different skills and will be able to show what they can do.
"So we have to form a team together for Monday."
Solskjaer warns Man Utd players not to feel sorry for themselves
Solskjaer warned that he would drop all players who would feel sorry after a first defeat of his acting reign – and he reiterated the importance of giving an immediate response.
"I hate losing games, boys hate it," he said. "They were shot, but there is no point in lingering on them. There are big games and good teams to come and we have to dust ourselves off.
"You have to bounce in this club. We still have challenges to play and facing Chelsea is difficult.
"We know we've lost our way against PSG for seven, eight or ten minutes. Apart from that, we were not so bad.
"You do not panic because you lost a match. You do not change everything. It does not change the mentality. "We want to go down to Chelsea, we want to have Liverpool here and impose on us in these games.
"There are a lot of other teams with injuries so you have to adapt to that."
