Karen Halm, architect and chief operating officer of Spektra Global, hosted 11 science girls from selected high schools in the Tema municipality, as part of a mentoring initiative.
The initiative focused on their professional preparation in science and its personal career path and the celebration of the "International Day of Science and Women's Research".
The three-part mentoring initiative included a personal / professional grooming session, a career counseling conversation, and a field visit to a construction site.
This day is part of Ms. Halm's personal social responsibility to contribute to girls' science education and career development in Ghana.
She is optimistic that "the platform will contribute to professional socialization and personal support in order to facilitate women's academic and professional success".
During the personal leadership session, Ms. Halm urged female students to be focused and to seek other women's motivation in the field of science.
"As girls in science, you need to take bold steps and make decisions that will have a positive impact on your life. Your studies should be your optimal motivation and you should always be time-sensitive, "she added.
Halm said that young women interested in science needed a lot of support because they were still in a field largely dominated by men and could feel strange and different at some point in their education and career.
In exploring his field, the architect Halm explained the art and science of architecture to young science students.
"Before giving life to a building, science is taken into account; it is the force of gravity, natural forces or phenomena, even the temperature of the environment is taken into account, "she said.
Selected students wearing their safety gear also visited a construction site to better visualize and combine architecture and science.
The architect Halm explained on a construction site of a 2,000-seat church auditorium that architecture is, by nature, serving individuals, communities and cultures and should not be practiced at the expense of the environment and the livelihood of the community.
"As a young adult, if you are considering a career in architecture, do not forget to always respect the environment," adding that "architects must always care about the physical and mental health of individuals and communities. communities when implementing their work.
Students at the end of the event expressed their gratitude to architect Karen Halm for the mentoring initiative and the valuable information provided on the importance of science to improve life.
"I learned a lot today, I never saw architecture as a science or a mathematics, as architect Karen Halm explained," said a student.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated on 11th February, is being implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women's and girls' access to science and their participation in Science.
Overall, this year was celebrated under the theme: "Investment in science and girls in science for inclusive green growth", recalling that women and girls play a crucial role in science and technology and that it is necessary to strengthen their participation to promote the growth of society.
