The Wood County Education Council has confirmed a case of hepatitis A in a person who is regularly on the campus of Parkersburg South High School.
The individual informed the school officials late Friday afternoon and began working diligently with the central office administrators and the health department to implement preventive measures to ensure the safety of our students, school staff and community members.
As a precaution, all weekend activities were canceled at Parkersburg South High School.
School guards and other school staff work all weekend. They are cleaning up the building as a whole to create a safe and supportive environment in which students and staff can return on Monday.
"Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff in our schools. Although we believe that only a very small part of the school could be contaminated, we are taking additional steps to thoroughly cleanse the entire school. On Wednesday, February 20, in collaboration with Ritchie Regional Health Services, vaccines will be available for all PSHS students and staff who wish to be vaccinated. Consent forms will be sent home on Monday with each student.
In partnership with MOVHD, there will be a vaccination clinic against hepatitis A

Officials from Wood County School have postponed the Friday night girls' basketball game between Parkersburg and Wheeling Park due to a reported case of hepatitis A on campus.
Parkersburg South's director, Betsy Patterson, said school officials had decided to cancel the match and clean up the school immediately after talking with local health authorities. .
Patterson said that the decision to defer activities to the school Friday night had been taken purely preventive and that no case of hepatitis A had been confirmed. She called this a "proactive" approach to the situation.
