Nigeria postpones general elections to 23 February

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been postponed until 23 February, with the country's general elections scheduled earlier for Saturday, February 16, 2019.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, President of INEC, told reporters at the commission's headquarters: "After a careful review of the implementation of its logistical and operational plan and determination to hold free, fair elections and credible, the Commission has reached the conclusion that it is no longer possible to hold the elections as planned ".

He announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections had been postponed until 23 February 2019.

He also said that the elections for governors and state bademblies were also postponed from one week to 9 March 2019.

He said the postponed timetable would give the Commission an opportunity to address the challenges identified in order to maintain the quality of the elections.

"It was a difficult decision for the Commission, but it was necessary for the proper conduct of elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

"The Commission will meet key stakeholders to keep them informed of developments on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2 pm at the Abuja International Conference Center," he added.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has 84,271,832 registered voters. While 71 people are competing for the presidential race, it is widely accepted that there is a direct battle between 76-year-old President Muhammadu Buhari of the Popular People's Congress, Man 72-year-old businessman and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, Democratic People's Party (PDP).

Eighty-nine other political parties are competing for various positions, with 8,878 candidates for national positions and governorships.
