TEPCO workers drive the transfer of used nuclear fuel from March: The Asahi Shimbun

Tokyo Electric Power Co. has put in place a rigorous training program so that technicians can withdraw spent nuclear fuel from reactor No. 3 of Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant at the end of March.

A reporter from The Asahi Shimbun was allowed to attend a Feb. 15 session involving the use of a huge 50-ton crane to lift and move a container, simulating the conditions under which the used nuclear fuel would be recovered.

The No. 3 reactor has 566 nuclear fuel bademblies stored in the fuel pool located on the top floor of the reactor building.

Moving used nuclear fuel is considered an urgent task as it fears that the damaged facility will be further damaged in the event of a new earthquake or tsunami.

The plans include removing seven fuel bademblies at the end of March.

A new roof for the reactor building was completed last year to contain the fallout.

A hydrogen explosion destroyed the original roof shortly after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake of March 2011 in eastern Japan, which generated a tsunami that flooded the plant cooling system and triggered the nuclear disaster.
