Kennedy Agyapong is deputy of Assin Central
Civil society society, Odekro expressed shock at Parliament's decision to reprimand only Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, for his derogatory remarks against the Assembly.
The Speaker of Parliament reprimanded Mr. Agyapong on Thursday for contempt of Parliament.
It was after he had apologized to the House for insulting Parliament.
The deputy would have described the House as useless for having Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu as the majority leader on Net2 television based in Accra in June 2018.
The group, in a statement, said the decision to simply reprimand the MP was a bad precedent for similar cases that may arise in the future.
"Odekro is shocked by Parliament's staggering powerlessness to severely punish Ken Ohene Agyapong (MP for Assin Central), the serial violator of Ghana's 1992 Constitution, the Standing Orders of the House and the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament."
"We believe that the sanction approved by Parliament by Parliament against the defiant in the form of a mere warning, constitutes a means of escape for future recalcitrant deputies. Even more troubling is its potential to lend credence to the unpleasant remarks that the person responsible for the sentence made against the august House, "the statement added.
The Parliament met on Thursday to, among other things, vote on the appropriate sanctions for Kennedy Agyapong after being condemned for contempt of Parliament by the Privileges Committee.
The committee's report recommended a reprimand or suspension of Kennedy Agyapong for the remainder of Parliament's session.
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, reprimanded Kennedy Agyapong after members of Parliament voted in favor of his reprimand instead of his suspension.
Kennedy Agyapong admitted that he made a mistake in June 2018 by uttering the words of the leader of the majority.
