The royal family takes official titles very seriously. And while some retain the same status all their lives, others, especially those approaching the British throne, receive improved titles a few times in their lives. As the daughter of a future king (and fourth in line of the British throne), Princess Charlotte will exchange her official royal titles several times in her life and, given her position in the royal family, could someday become a princess royal when Prince William ascends the throne. However, the title change may not occur immediately. Find out why and how Princess Charlotte's royal title will change throughout her life.
Will Princess Charlotte be the Princess Royal?
The royal princess belongs to the eldest daughter of the monarch. Which means that once Prince William ascended the throne, Princess Charlotte qualifies for such status. However, she will probably have to wait a few years before receiving her new royal title.
Currently, Princess Anne holds the title of Princess Royal. And, she retains her status until her death. This means that if she is still there when Prince Charles pbades and Prince William ascends the throne (which is very likely given the longevity of his mother), she would remain a royal princess. With the title occupied, Princess Charlotte would only get high ranking status after her grand-aunt's visit.
At the time of the death of Princess Anne, Princess Charlotte will not automatically become the Princess Royal (as is done as a sovereign). Instead, she will have to wait for her father, Prince William, to award the title at an official ceremony.
Royal title of Princess Charlotte
As a prominent member of the royal family, Princess Charlotte was born with the status of king. For the moment, her official royal title is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Cambridge is a reflection of his family – the royal titles of his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. And the young royal will hold a title similar to that of his father until he ascends the throne. This is how the royal title of Princess Charlotte will change as her father climbs the royal ladder.
Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Wales
Princess Charlotte may one day become Princess of Wales – but not in the same way as Princess Diana. When his grandfather, Prince Charles, ascends the throne, he will probably make Prince William the Prince of Wales. This status belongs to the eldest son and the heir of the monarch. Similar to the Royal Princess, the current Duke of Cambridge will not receive his new name without an official ceremony marking the change of status.
If Prince William becomes the Prince of Wales, his wife and children will automatically adopt similar royal titles. Kate Middleton will give up her title of Duke of Cambridge and become the Princess of Wales (as her late stepmother). And, the smaller royals will become Princes and Princess of Wales.
Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte
Once Prince William has acceded to the throne, Princess Charlotte will get a new status. Since a monarch no longer has a region in his official royal title, his children give up the geographical reference and simply become princes and princesses. Princess Charlotte would become Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte, as her great-grandmother did when King George VI ascended the throne.
