Bayern brings hopes of the German Champions League to Liverpool

Since the 2005-06 season, at least one German team has always managed to qualify for the last eight.

This proud race will be threatened if Bayern suffer a heavy defeat in the first leg of the last 16 games before the second leg on 13 March.

"We can not make mistakes in these matches, but I think we can cause problems in Liverpool," said Bayern midfielder James Rodriguez.

"We have a good enough team to pbad, if it goes well."

Still, Bayern's confidence in Bayern's chances dropped on Friday, as two games prevailed against Augsburg, Bundesliga winner 3: 2, where Rodriguez was replaced after 56 minutes of inactivity.

Although sitting just above the relegation squares, Augsburg was the last Bundesliga team to expose Bayern's weaknesses in defense against quick counterattacks.

"Everything needs to be improved, but we had Liverpool in the background," admitted Bayern coach Niko Kovac.

"We have to perform differently, but it will be at the international level and it's a very different goal, I guess it will be a completely different performance from us."

After Borussia Dortmund's 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur last week, and facing Schalke against England's champions on Wednesday, Bayern is Germany's best prospect in terms of quarter-final performance .

Dortmund dominates the Bundesliga in front of Bayern, but in Europe, it is the Bavarians who have made the habit of reaching the final stages of the Champions League.

"Dortmund has kept the Bundesliga exciting this year, but at this level you can not commit three individual mistakes of this type (against the Spurs)," said former Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer, now an expert at Eurosport.

"That's why I think Bayern is the leader in this respect and that he is carrying the flag in the normal picture that is emerging now."

Any fan of Liverpool who attended Bayern's fight in Augsburg would have something to be optimistic about when the defense of the Bavarians cracked dramatically.

Escape from the defense

Augsburg winger Philipp Max quickly found a spot on the left flank, which earned him a goal from Leon Goretzka after just 13 seconds. The South Korean midfielder, Ji Dong, has imposed himself in second place.

Kingsley Coman, who should be in good shape despite an ankle injury, saved Bayern with two goals in the first half before he named David Alaba's winner.

Still, Sammer is waiting for another story than that of Bayern at Anfield.

"You can not compare Augsburg and Liverpool, they (Bayern) will be ready for Liverpool," said Sammer.

"Nevertheless, both goals (Augsburg) have come from the wings and you can not let such balls pbad.

"If they commit these mistakes against Liverpool, it will be difficult."

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer admits they can hardly give Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp the same chances as Augsburg to be gifted.

"Liverpool are a solid team that will attack and get more chances than Augsburg," said Neuer, back in goal after three games with a thumb injury.

"We must be more compact.

"When you work without a ball, there is order in our games, but on the wings, we were caught off guard and punished accordingly."

Bayern Munich President Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he was disappointed to see Dortmund beaten by the Spurs.

"I did not smile and I was not happy I lost 3-0," Rummenigge said.

"I think (the result) is not good for the Bundesliga … These two clubs have always sported the flag (for Germany) in Europe."
