Surfline Communications Ltd, an Aboriginal Internet Service Provider, is to provide registered members of all public libraries in the country with unimpeded access to WiFi Internet connectivity.
Services will begin with libraries in the Greater Accra region.
A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed between the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) and Surfline in Accra last Friday.
Mr. Hayford Siaw, Acting Director General of GhLA, and Mr. Rene Gameli-Kwame, Executive Director of Surfline, have signed for their respective institutions.

The GhLA, for its part, will publicize and project the partnership between the two institutions in social and traditional media, and will also provide space for the promotion of the Surfline brand at key events of the year.

Speaking before signing the memorandum of understanding, Mr. Siaw said he was delighted that the partnership with Surfline is helping the GhLA to be more connected.
He said it was refreshing to have libraries "where young people can come, take out their laptops and connect to the Internet via WiFi."
Mr. Siaw stated that GhLA's vision was to ensure that all libraries in the country have an Internet connection that allows registered members of public libraries to connect via WiFi.
He noted that, despite the Internet penetration in the country, there remained a significant gap in terms of access to connectivity, noting that libraries could serve as a gateway.
He announced that GhLA was working with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to equip all libraries in the country with computers, adding: "Given the application of the distance education in the country, every Ghanaian should have access to a computer. and the Internet. "

Mr Gameli-Kwame, for his part, congratulated the GhLA leadership for taking such an ambitious step to reorganize libraries and provide Internet connectivity.
He said Mr. Siaw's vision was encouraging and needed support and that his company was willing to partner with the GhLA to ensure its realization.
Gameli-Kwame said Surfline, as a broadband wireless telecommunications company, "is not content to provide Internet connectivity".
