According to reports, Honda plans to close its Swindon plant, bringing another blow to an auto sector already struggling with the effects of Brexit-related uncertainty.
The Japanese car maker, which employs 3,500 people in the United Kingdom, plans to close the Swindon plant from 2022.
A source close to Honda told Sky News that the manufacturer would maintain its European headquarters near Bracknell, Berkshire, as well as its UK-based Formula One team, but that the factory would close.
The plan, which could be unveiled this week, gives no indication as to the conclusion of an agreement on Brexit just weeks before March 29, the date of the departure of Great Britain from the European Union.
Car manufacturers have issued bleak warnings about the dangers of a no-deal scenario and Honda itself has said it would cost the company tens of millions of pounds.
It is expected that production will be brought back to Japan, in part because it can guarantee duty-free exports to the EU, said Sky News.
Earlier this month, Nissan abandoned its plan to build its new X-Trail SUV in Sunderland, while Ford announced the removal of 1,000 jobs as part of a European plan to cut costs more large.
Jaguar Land Rover cited Brexit as one of the factors behind its own job cuts.
