Police in Broome, Western Australia, broadcast Twitter video surveillance footage on Sunday – which quickly caught the attention of the world.
The 15-second video begins with flashes of lightning in the sky during a storm.
Suddenly, a lightning spark reveals an unidentified object emerging from the clouds.
Broome police said: "After reviewing CCTV on the city beach during the storm last night, it seems we were not alone."
The video has since been viewed more than 5,000 times and has attracted many comments.
One viewer said, "It's a cursed extraterrestrial, but I do not know if it's a replica of Area 51 or an intergalactic vehicle. Foolish images.
Another said, "Incredible, it looks like a lightning bolt. How lucky to see him first hand.
"Maybe HAARP [High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program] interferences dropped them … they fly in the sun over Mercury, "added another conspirator.
But the most likely explanation, as many pointed out to many viewers, was that it was simply a bright light reflection.
This occurs just days after the appearance of a group of mysterious lights, "not visible to the naked eye," in a photograph.
Last week, theorists also suggested that "half-bird, half-man" relics found in Egypt and Peru "prove that extraterrestrials have visited the Earth."
