The Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly, the Ablekuma Central Assembly and the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly have been separated from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. (AMA).

The Northeast Gonja District Assembly is being separated from the Gonja East Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region.

There are currently 254 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the creation of the five MMDAs will bring the number to 260.

In 2017, a bill was pbaded to allow the creation of 38 new districts, which the Ministry of Local Government hoped to help bring development closer to the people.
