Tilda Swinton is transformed for a new role in The Souvenir.

The award-winning actress has already made the habit of putting on makeup and prosthetics in her roles, including in the recent Suspiria, but she's now showing a new look for her latest independent hit.

The Souvenir, directed by Joanna Hogg, follows a timid and ambitious young woman named Julie (represented by Swinton's daughter, Honor Swinton Byrne), who engages with an unreliable man (Strike's star, Tom Burke) while he studies the art of cinema.

Tilda Swinton plays the role of Julie's protective old mother, in full transformation, with a long gray wig and appropriate wrinkles.

This is an emotional and romantic film, with The Souvenir winning the Grand Jury Prize at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

After receiving rave reviews and praise at festivals, Indiewire reports that Hogg is already starting work on the sequel to the film later this year and will feature a new romantic chapter in the character's life, with Swinton Byrne acting against the Twilight star Robert Pattinson.

The Souvenir is also performed by Richard Ayoade, star of IT Crowd group and director of submarines.

The American distributor A24 describes the film as "an enigmatic and personal portrait of the artist as a young woman, combining pbadionate emotions and exquisite aesthetics in a lush and dreamlike story of young adult and first love".

British director Joanna Hogg is best known for her films Unrelated, Archipelago and Exhibition, and has also written the screenplay for The Souvenir.

The Souvenir is released in the United States on May 17, but has no release date in the UK yet.
