Guus Hiddink may be 72 but he would be a safe pair for Chelsea

When fans turn on their manager, the writing is on the wall. The mood with Maurizio Sarri in Manchester United's Chelsea defeat was vitriolic.

I do not remember the last time Chelsea fans sang, "You do not know what you're doing" in front of one of their leaders. This is not a handful of disgruntled fans. The crowd has returned.

How can the club believe that Sarri qualifies for the Carabao Cup final against a Manchester City team that beat Chelsea 6-0 just two weeks ago? It's time to install a caretaker until the end of the season.

As for a quick fix, Chelsea could have recourse to Guus Hiddink, even when he is 72 years old.

Sarri seems to be a nice man but did not help himself. His stubbornness with the substitutions made him look like a pony one round. He also admitted that Eden Hazard is free to leave. You want your manager to fight to keep your best players.

But the most damning fact was to recognize that Sarri was hard to motivate for his players. These words must have sounded in the ears of Chelsea's superiors as their team lost 2-0 at half-time against United.

With regard to a quick fix, they could turn to Guus Hiddink. He may be 72 years old and is now responsible for the China Under 21, but has proven to be a safe pair of hands in his previous two stints.

Steve Holland, Gareth Southgate's badistant for England and a former Chelsea coach who knows the club well, would be an alternative. But the appointment of the next permanent director depends greatly on Roman Abramovich's future.

He got rid of coaches who did more than Sarri and yet the Italian stays at work. Has Abramovich changed approach or is it losing interest?
