The recent winter storms and the clean-up that followed left a lot of snow in the city.
Now the Great Falls Fire Department reminds the public to ensure that snow is not accumulated on fire hydrants.
Easy access to fire hydrants is essential for a quick reaction in case of fire.
Firefighters said they needed three feet around the mouth for the snow to clear so they could insert the key they use to open it.
They said that most Great Falls fire trucks carried only about 500 liters of water and that the water ran out quickly in case of fire.
Lieutenant Kris Whitaker said that water is essential and that a reaction time can cost precious minutes.
"Three to five minutes may be enough to extinguish the fire before it overtakes the rest of the building, so you can see that if we spend that time on the fire rather than to be able to extinguish the fire, you can see that it could make the difference between saving a house or not, "said Whitaker.
It is important to regularly check the fire hydrants to ensure they are not covered with snow from the road or clear of the sidewalk.
