(PRESS RELEASE) – The Ministry of Health and Welfare, with the help of the St. Lucia Cancer Society, is working on the establishment of a cancer registry and the treatment of cancer. improvement of cancer data collection on the island.
As part of efforts to establish a cancer registry in St. Lucia, a review of cancer data collected over the last five years was conducted recently.
The cancer registry should be used as a monitoring tool to guide the planning and implementation of cancer prevention and control programs.
Acting National Epidemiologist, Dr. Michelle Francois, said the cancer registry was fundamental because it would provide a better snapshot of cancer in St. Lucia.
"We were extremely pleased to have been able to gather this data that could guide our programming and highlight the areas we need to focus on. We know about cancer, and it is largely preventable by early detection, screening and modification of certain behavioral practices. So we're looking at the data to guide us, and some areas have been flagged but need to be improved and we've highlighted them. The upcoming plan will consolidate this partnership with the Saint Lucia Cancer Society and will also include other stakeholders to get a more accurate picture of the cancer situation in St. Lucia. "
The president of the Saint Lucia Cancer Society, Tamara Remy, said such an initiative is important as it will guide decision-making to improve cancer prevention, control and treatment.
"Cancer is here in Saint Lucia, we need to be able to use the information. we have a lot of campaigns where we can help prevent cancer; we will help find ways to make an early diagnosis. All this information, through this collaboration between the St. Lucia Cancer Society, the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, will truly aim to help the St. Lucian public. Dr. Remy expressed hope that the cancer registry will help reduce the burden of cancer in St. Lucia.
