NXT came back into our lives last night (February 20th) with a big North American championship game. You can find all the results on the live blog here.
Aleister Black def. Roderick Strong with black mbad
The rest of the undisputed ERA team attack Black after the match. Ricochet rushes to give a hand. Black and Ric are holding the ring.
This was quite the opening match. It was a real pleasure to launch the series.
Looking at it, I figured how impressed I was with the fact that Roddy Strong had found such a niche in the brand. It was one of the most "meh" debuts for me and even with the video packages that were trying to get his fans to communicate with him, he was still pretty bland.
But then he joined the Undisputed ERA and really found his rhythm as a preppy shower in the group of showers.
Aleister's place was an obstacle to the success of this match. It's really like he's in his twilit phase of NXT. And it was a feeling I had before he ran Gross and Smack down. It is a difficult position for any promotion to find room for a man or woman leaving the title scene.
The fact that Black won the race makes me think that he still has some time in NXT (or at least that was what he was planning to do when he was recorded). Ricochet and Black are arguing with the guys from ERA. It's a bit like a recovery, but we'll give them time to give them a special look.
Dusty Rhodes' clbadic returns in two weeks. Four of the eight teams in the first round are Undreputed ERA, Forgotten Sounds, Street Profits and Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel.
There is not much to do here. But the clbadic is fun.
Personally, I hope that they will make things happen with the last four teams. A surprise or two would really spice things up. For example, they used a team like Ciampa and Gargano in the first year. Or perhaps bring in the main team of the lineup to help him get noticed.
The first four teams make sense, but it's not the most exciting. I like the ERA and the European Union is a fun team, but the Profits and Sons are in a place where they are not exciting at the moment. Again, what better way to enlighten a team than to give them a good ride in the Dusty?
Mia Yim def. Xia Li
Mia is attacked by Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir after the match. She is rescued by MJ Jenkins, Lacey Lane and Jessie Elaban. However, the Horsewomen neutralize the backup. Then Duke and Shafir hold Yim while Baszler kneels in her face.
Shayna Baszler is really a force with which one has to count now that she has her Horsewomen in her corner. They did a quick job of girls doing the backup for Yim and then the champion gave a stiff knee to the face.
Yim, have a match on TV with Baszler on TV, which will be good for her. She has been without direction since her arrival on NXT TV. (In addition, his matches did not destroy the roof, this is not a requirement of success.)
But now she has a big game with the top of the division. What better way to show that it's time to be more featured on television than with a good match against the champion?
His match with Xia is a bit of an afterthought since the post match angle is the real takeaway. But I really liked what Xia showed in the ring. I'm looking forward to seeing more things than she can do in time.
The last point I will make here is that NXT should try to prevent multiple segments from ending with factions attacking people. They opened with when Undisputed attacked Black. And then they went to the well again here. They did it the same week before. It seems less special when both teams do it in the same show.
Jeremy Borash (!!) interview Matt Riddle. The Bro talks about being himself, recalling the advice that it is better to be told "lower the tone" rather than "lower the tone". He talks about the victory over Kbadius Ohno. His eyes are on the gold that he can get.
It's crazy to see Jeremy Borash on NXT TV? Being a lifetime Impact player not so long ago, it's still weird to see him on black and gold. It is the man who has had his head shaved by EC3. He teamed up with Abyss against Scott Steiner and Josh Mathews. (I guess he can always get his head shaved by EC3 or team up with Abyss if he wanted to.)
I guess we should talk about Bro. It was good. Honestly, I do not think sitting interviews are the best way to introduce Riddle. He is very charismatic, but talking in front of a camera is not the way to show it. Face to face with an opponent, his work on the ring expresses more his charisma than a situation like this.
If you want to see more riddles, or more importantly, more of Jeremy Borash, you can watch more of this in the video above.
Velveteen Dream def. Johnny Gargano wins the North American Championship
It was a headache of a main event.
He started by taking his time, which must be a 20-minute televised match. The story behind the match seemed to be that Dream could not follow Gargano. He seemed out of his element against a veteran like Johnny.
Even as the match came to a head, Johnny was the one who capitalized on the mistakes and risks the challenger would make and take. However, in the end, Dream was able to survive Gargano and win the victory when the time finally arrived.
Once the match was over, they showed Tommaso Ciampa backstage with a somewhat emotional but curious look.
Now, Dream is a champion, but what remains to leave to Johnny and his strange relationship with Tommaso. (This does not include the fact that they are united together to Gross and Smack down. Let's forget about that.) This is not a loss of title for Johnny Wrestling. This has more implications.
Earlier in the night, Johnny refused to offer the champion to be in his corner. Then he lost. Will that convince him that he needs more Ciampa in his life, despite what Candice LeRae would say about all this?
It's always great when a very good match for the title already has a story ready for the loser and not just for the winner.
A very good match to open the show and even better to close the show. The middle of the series was not so insignificant, but the main event contributed to this show.
