Actor Jussie Smollett was arrested by police in Chicago, accused of making a false police report on a homophobic and racist badault that he said had happened to him.
A spokeswoman for the police confirmed the arrest at INSIDER. Tom Ahern, police spokesperson m said Smollett could be sentenced to three years in prison for disorderly conduct and falsification of a police report. A second spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, m said that Smollett is now in custody of the detectives.
The actor "Empire" was accused Wednesday of having made a false police report and committing a felony crime when he said he was attacked in Chicago by two men who had instigated racist and anti-gay insults and slung a rope around his neck, police said.
Smollett made it early Thursday to face charges, Guglielmi told the Associated Press.

Smollett will appear in court later today.
Smollett, who is black and gay and plays a gay character on the Fox show, said he was attacked by two masked men who had beaten him and made derogatory comments. He stated that they had shouted "This is the country of MAGA" – an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's slogan: "Make America Great Again" – before fleeing.
The charges against Smollett, 36, on Wednesday, were revealed on the same day as detectives and two brothers previously deemed suspects – and subsequently laundered – testified about the case in front of a grand jury.
The investigators did not comment on what the brothers told the detectives nor what evidence was collected. But police reported last Friday that Smollett's story raised serious questions when he had announced a "significant shift in the trajectory" of the investigation after the brothers' release.
Smollett's lawyers, Todd Pugh and Victor Henderson, said in a statement to INSIDER after his indictment: "Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, especially when he is not guilty. there was an investigation like this one wrong, was the object of repeated leaks. "
"In these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and set up an aggressive defense."
