President Akufo-Addo and former President Mahama
Former President John Mahama said that President Akufo-Addo should lead the way in fighting vigilantism by showing his commitment to dissolve such groups within the new ruling Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Mr. Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo is required, as president, to dissolve his "state-sponsored self-defense groups".
He made the remark during his last meeting with the delegates of the National Democratic Congress (CND) in Drobo, in the district of Jaman South, in the Brong Ahafo region.
Nana Akufo-Addo is responsible for the introduction of self-defense groups in the country, although all political parties have male chauvinists to ensure security within the party. He added that the NPP, whose president was then leader of the opposition, had brought in the country to train thugs of the nuclear power plant.
The former president said the government was putting state resources at the disposal of its self-defense groups and that other political parties were beginning to formulate an answer.
Mahama, however, stressed that the NDC is committed to peaceful elections and that it will not do anything to threaten or violate the security of the state.
He also said the NDC has confidence in the state security agencies to ensure security in its upcoming presidential primaries and therefore would not deploy any party security group organized for this purpose.
