Director S. Craig Zahler feast on nasty and brutal stories. He burst on the scene with the ultra-violent western Tomahawk bone and follow up with Fight in the cell block 99, a deeply unpleasant prison movie and brazenly bloody two years later. Now he's back with Dragged on the concrete, a movie whose title can telegraph what the audience might feel after watching it.
Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn play cops that are caught in a video of police brutality and then plunge into the underworld. Sounds pretty vague?

Zahler lives for skuzz. I read two of his novels – Wraiths of the broken earth and An average business on North Ganson, both of which have been at a stage of development as movies – and they each contain deeply troubling scenes of intense violence. And it does not even mention his films – one of them, by the way, has already described a man who has his face literally dragged on concrete and removed. This is probably one of the wildest moments in the history of cinema.
On the one hand, I am repelled by the idea of this film. The appearance of Gibson alone makes me want to jump. And Gibson badociates with this director for this history – the one that seems to involve a pair of white policemen who are "canceled" and then take things in hand because they feel indebted to something on behalf of the company's films. But on the other hand, part of me is curious to know how much Zahler will try to push the envelope further and if he has something more important to say here. We will know it in about a month.
The film presents much of the same distribution as Fight in the cell block 99 – Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, and Udo Kier – while adding Gibson, Michael Jai White, and Tory Kittles.
Here is the official description:
DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE follows two police detectives who are suspended when a video of their hard-arm tactics is leaked to the media. With little money and no options, the embittered police officers go down into the criminal world and find more than they want to wait in the shadows.
Dragged on the concrete arrives in theaters and in VOD on March 22, 2019.
