The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now killed 531 people, according to the report released Thursday by the Ministry of Health, the total number of cases being set at 853.
The new total includes 788 confirmed and 65 probable cases. A further 177 suspected cases are under investigation in what is now the second largest Ebola epidemic in world history, following the epidemic in Africa. from the West of 2014.
There are signs of progress, including a window of three weeks after the notification of the last case in Beni, which was hit hard earlier in the outbreak. In addition, no new cases have been reported in Komanda in the last 40 days, according to the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
At the same time, the list of affected and monitored communities is currently 22 in the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, bordering South Sudan and Uganda. They include 221 confirmed cases, including 165 deaths, in Katwa, and other cases under investigation. Katwa remains a hot spot with more deaths now than Beni, although about the same number of cases.
The region remains unstable, with the WHO reporting new attacks against Ebola facilities. They include a site in Katwa that was moved for security reasons and another that was ransacked in Butembo by members of the armed group. In Goma, physical barriers were removed due to resistance to medical screening and inadequate security means, while an institution from Ituri to Mambasa was destroyed by people requiring vaccination of the entire population. It was closed on February 15th.
More than 82,000 people received the rVSV-ZEBOV approved experimental vaccine, of which about 20,000 were in Beni and Katwa. According to the latest update from the WHO, at least 68 health workers have contracted the virus, including new cases in Katwa. At least 21 health workers have died.
