The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Fire Department confirmed to Joy News that a fire had ravaged the new Makola market in Accra.
According to Elis Robinson, fire departments have trouble accessing the basement of the mall, where the fire broke out, because of the abundant smoke.
"There is a lot of smoke coming out of the basement. This is what prevents us from effectively fighting the fire. We asked for a smoke extractor and they brought it so that we could extract some of the smoke from the place, "he told Daniel Dadzie at the Joy Super Morning Show on Friday.
The fire, which would have started in a hair shop, eventually spread to the entire market, Robinson said.
We do not know if there are deaths.
