Defender Angus MacDonald of Hull City will not play again this season after being challenged by deep vein thrombosis.
The 26-year-old man was put away in August because of a calf problem, but other tests in November revealed the presence of a blood clot.
"I hope we'll meet him again for the pre-season," Hull director Nigel Adkins told the club's website.
"He stayed with the medical team, we were hoping he would be back in March, but that will not happen now."
Former Barnsley and Torquay defenseman, MacDonald, had already suffered a blood clot in the lungs at the age of 15, but had recovered completely.
