A Lagos division of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has issued an arrest warrant for former Super Eagles star Austin Okocha for arresting tax evasion.
Mr. Okocha – or Jay Jay Okocha, as he is commonly known – has repeatedly failed to appear in court to explain why he failed to pay his taxes.
Adedayo Akintoye, the judge, issued the arrest warrant against the former captain of the Eagles on January 29, before suspending him until February 19.
However, on February 19, the prosecution did not proceed with the arrest, forcing the judge to adjourn again until April 15 and ordering the warrant to be executed from here there.
The football star faces a three-step accusation instituted by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, on the verge of non-remittance of his income and non-payment of the tax.
The state filed the charges through its prosecutor, Jide Martins, in June 2017 and the trial began four months later.
The defendant did not, however, appear before the court.
After several adjournments without Mr. Okocha appearing while he had received the court documents, Mr. Martins requested the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.
According to the prosecutor, Mr. Okocha did not provide his tax returns for tax purposes to the Lagos State Tax Department.
Mr. Martins also stated that the defendant had failed to pay his income taxes.
He said that the offenses contravened sections 56 (a) and (b) of Law No. 8 of 2006 on the Tax Administration of Lagos and Article 94 (1) of the Law on Taxation. Personal income tax, chap. P8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria of 2004.
