Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari says the allegations that his government aims to impose Islam in Nigeria are bad, dangerous, misleading and ungodly.
The President, in a statement by his special adviser on media advertising, Femi Adesina, Friday in Abuja, said the false allegations came less than 24 hours before Saturday's presidential and national elections.
He stated that the purpose of the allegations was to incite religious divisions to score cheap political goals.
The statement said: "President Muhammadu Buhari has learned before the next elections that unscrupulous Nigerians are again falsely and wickedly claiming that the government is planning to impose Islam in Nigeria.
"The goal is clearly to fan the religious divide for political gain. Some of these same people made these sneaky and fabricated statements before the 2015 elections. They failed miserably.
"The President firmly affirms the oath he has taken to the people of Nigeria to faithfully defend the Constitution of Nigeria.
"This constitution guarantees freedom of worship to all Nigerians. It is this guarantee that allows all Nigerians to practice their religion or religion without hindrance. "

President Buhari also affirmed his commitment to freedom of religion and worship for all Nigerians and that no religion or religious denomination would ever be imposed on a Nigerian.
"It is dangerous, misleading and impious to play politics with religion," he added.
