David Hocknet is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century and a major contributor to the 1960s Pop Art movement. He now paints on his iPad. The only problem? Many commentators think they are undesirable.
The controversy erupted after Hockney sent 300 iPad drawings to an exhibition in Paris, former New York Times web director Khoi Vinh going so far as to say that they are "very bbad".
That said, the iPad seems to be a revolutionary tool for Hockney, who has advanced technology, mainly in that it allows him to paint at any time of the day and to use the full spectrum of the color wheel. For example, he was able to paint the dawn rising on the North Sea, even if with conventional painting equipment, it would be "too dark to see the painting".
In other words, the iPad is actually a canvas of great artist … but that does not mean that each resulting work is a jewel.
