FIFA bars Chelsea from recruiting players for one year after violations

London – Just hours after Chelsea's victory in the Europa League, the club owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich received another blow: his ban on recruiting new players.

The English team will not be allowed to register new members during the next two transfer periods, FIFA said in a statement on Friday, citing violations of Article 19 of the Youth Recruitment Regulations. Chelsea said it "categorically refutes" FIFA's findings and would appeal the decision.

The news is particularly untimely, the team stalling in sixth place in the Premier League, 15 points ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool. Bookmakers have reduced Sarri's chances of being sacked after the defeats of City and their neighbors, Manchester United, over the past two weeks.
