The federal government announced Thursday that it would soon end illegal immigrants in the country.
The Minister of Energy, Public Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, made this revelation Thursday in Lagos during an address to his Gabfest 2 program on the theme "Where are the Jobs" .
The minister, who was apparently unhappy with the recent expulsion of 723 Nigerians by the Ghana Immigration Service, lamented the inhuman treatment of Nigerians abroad.
He pointed out that Nigeria also has laws in place to deport illegal immigrants to the country.
According to Mr. Fashola, audits are ongoing on many of the country's yards to determine the number of ECOWAS citizens working on these sites. He pointed out that even though they did not need a visa to enter the country, needed for them a work permit.
"But you have heard that Ghana has deported Nigerians. It's the right that every country has, but it's a right that we've never exercised but that we're going to exercise right now. It's just the law, every foreigner who has legitimate papers coming to Nigeria is welcome. If you want to work in Nigeria, the same rules that you have to get a work permit apply to, go ahead and get one.
"If you do not have a work permit here and you're on my site, I'll take you outside. This is already happening. Two months ago, I refused to approve the payment of a consultant because I wanted to see his work permit and ensure its validity for the period of work completed. Fortunately, he produced it and he was paid. This is the policy of President Muhammadu Buhari's government on employment and employment, "said the minister.
