Chicago firefighters have acquired the Philadelphia Union's CJ Sapong striker for a combined allocation amount of up to $ 450,000, the two clubs said Saturday.
Philadelphia will receive $ 200,000 in 2019, $ 100,000 in 2020, and an additional $ 100,000 in 2019, which will be donated to Philadelphia if Chicago were to acquire these funds this year.
The eight-year-old MLS veteran moved to Chicago after four seasons in Philadelphia and Kansas City.
Sapong, who turned 30 last December, scored one of the top 16 goals of his career with the Union in 2017, but continued with a disappointing season last year.
However, he remained in the starting lineup of Union coach Jim Curtin for most of the season due to his willingness to badume a broad offensive role, leaving room for Jamaican striker Cory Burke.
"CJ has produced many memorable moments in the Union's jersey and his efforts in the community have been admirable," said in a statement the sports director of the first year of the Union, Ernst Tanner. "It's the best decision for both CJ and for the union at the moment."
In total, Sapong has 56 goals and 23 badists in 233 appearances in the MLS.
While Nemanja Nikolic is expected to remain Fire's main target in 2019, Sapong could ironically play the role of David Accam's versatile second forward for Fire in 2017, before joining the Union before the 2018 season.
"CJ brings a different skill set to our attack options," said fire club president and general manager Nelson Rodriguez in a statement. "We can now be more varied in the way we attack."
