The Philadelphia Union swapped the club's second-leading scorer in Saturday's Chicago Fire.
Striker C. J. Sapong, who has scored 36 goals in 123 regular season playoffs for the Union, was sent to the fire in exchange for $ 450,000 in allowances.
The Union will receive $ 200,000 in general allocation for 2019, $ 100,000 in targeted allocation for 2020 and an additional $ 100,000 from GAM if the fire acquires these funds in 2019. If the $ 100,000 Additional GAMs are not sent to the Union for the 2019 season, they will have it for 2020. The Union will also receive $ 50,000 TAM of Fire for 2020 if certain performance indicators are met.
Union sports director Ernst Tanner told the reporter Saturday that the fire had made a first attempt for Sapong a few weeks ago, but that the offer was not enough. When Chicago returned to the bargaining table with the offer that had been accepted, the union approved it.
"Chicago contacted us a few weeks ago," Tanner said. "At that time, we were not comfortable with that decision and not with the numbers. They called, but they came back and the time had come for us.
Sapong, 30, who has played four seasons with the Union, has had one of the worst seasons of his career. He scored four goals and provided three badists in 2018.
Sapong was part of a group of six forwards who were competing for two starting positions in the new 4-4-2 club diamond formation. He will have no chance to beat the rest of his competition in Philadelphia now that he goes to the third Major League Soccer club of his career.
Regarding the size of the lineup, Tanner is comfortable with 25 players in his squad to start the MLS season next week, with five of these players vying for the forward positions.
"If we continue playing with two strikers, I'd say it's more than enough," Tanner said. "In addition, we have guys from Steel (second-row team of the United Soccer League, Bethlehem) who could make things happen. I am very happy with the situation. "
This is the second high-profile deal between Union and Fire in the last two years. David Accam went to the union in January 2018 in exchange for $ 1.2 million in benefits.
