Cases were reported in January and February and involved five men and four women from Oslo, Akershus, Buskerud, Rogaland and Vest-Agder.

Bacteria with a similar DNA profile were detected in all nine individuals.

To date, the source of the outbreak is unknown and health authorities are questioning patients and taking food samples to try to discover the source of the outbreak.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health notes that the work of investigation can be complicated and time consuming. In many cases, it will be impossible to find the source of the infection or whether it is a common source. It is too early to say whether there is a limited epidemic or whether its reach will increase.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella often fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, an infection with Salmonella can cause the body to enter the blood and cause more serious diseases such as arterial infections (infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
