The winners of the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced today at a ceremony in Santa Monica, California, hosted by Aubrey Plaza (which, after that, should all). Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street could speak awarded Best Feature, while Boots Riley's sorry to disturb you won the award for best first film. Jenkins also won the Best Director award and used his stage time to honor the women who were nominated (three of the five nominees) and the women who helped Beale Street. Glenn Close has further strengthened her hold on the Oscar for Best Actress, winning the Best Female Role Award; Ethan Hawke, who was not present at the awards ceremony, was named best man leader.
