The outgoing secretary general of Ghana's Christian Council congratulated the president for asking the two main political parties to take steps to dissolve their militias.
Reverend Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong said that the call for action launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo during her speech on the state of the nation before Parliament last Thursday was very encouraging.
He added that the president was listening to the recent public outcry over the need to dissolve political activists.
According to him, last week the President called on the new Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to dialogue, disband and disarm the militant groups, which is "very good".
He stated that a process of dialogue was a very good start, as both parties "injured each other by acts of vigilance and that, therefore, a way to heal oneself is to sit down and to dialogue ".
"Dialogue is therefore useful: we do not start with legislation and law, but through dialogue, which will give us a lasting solution".
He urged the leaders of the NPP and NDC to accept the call to participate in the dialogue.
"They must accept that Ghanaians do not feel comfortable with the presence of political militias and must respond to the concerns and fears of Ghanaians."
Reverend Opuni-Frimpong said that what the Ghanaians needed now, was at least the acceptance of political parties within the time limit of a week allocated to dialogue by the president.
At least they can meet during the call of a week to start the process, after which they could come in and ask for more time to deal with the problems, he said.
The Reverend said that both parties would also need an "honest middleman" or a mediator, who would be a third party in the person of an individual or a group of people or even an institution, in which they could all trust and respect, just as in the Dagbon experience.
