Nemanja Matic could be away for a month after suffering a "hard blow" in training.
The Manchester United midfielder will miss Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford and face a fight to return to Paris Saint Germain next month.
He did not arrive with the rest of the team as United showed up at Old Trafford. Anthony Martial was also absent for a groin injury.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already without Paul Pogba, suspended, for the eighth final of the Champions League opposed to the French giants. And the potential absence of Matic is another blow to United's chances of reversing a 2-0 deficit.
The Serbian international has been in outstanding form under Solskjaer – part of a three-way midfielder with Pogba and Ander Herrera.
This trio became Solskjaer's favorite engine room and played a key role in a series of 11 wins in 13 games in all competitions.
Solskjaer says United's resurgence is not complete – insisting that much more remains to be done.
He wrote in his program notes: "For our part, we know we have another equipment. I think we learned the game from PSG earlier this month; now, we want to show this by performing a huge performance in a huge match here at Old Trafford. "
